RHONDA WILSON
Tohono
O'odham
My
name is Rhonda Wilson and I am from the village of Little Tucson
on the Tohono O'odham Nation. I learned how to weave by watching
and mimicking my great-grandmother, the late Isabell Miguel when
I was eight-years-old. I would use the discarded yucca shavings
to form what I thought was a basket. That same year, I finished
my first basket. I was so proud of myself.
I weave because
it relaxes me and I enjoy weaving with my family, my husband and
two daughters. I weave split stitch and closed stitch made out of
yucca (both green and white), beargrass, banana yucca root (red),
and devil's claw (black)
Weaving baskets
is a hobby. It inspires me because it is a family tradition which
I am passing on to my daughters and
nieces.
