LOIS LISTON
Tohono O'odham
I grew
up the village of No:ligk, Arizona on the Tohono O'odham Nation.
When I was growing up, all of the women in my family wove baskets
as a part of daily life. I remember watching my maternal grandmother
Rosario Cruz and learning about baskets until I finally started
weaving myself. I now weave traditional Tohono O'odham baskets.
I mostly
weave to keep connected to my Tohono O'odham culture, especially
to share it with my grandchildren. Coming from a long line of weavers,
I will do my best to share it with my grandchildren. It helps them
- and me - keep disciplined and connected the the O'odham Himdag
- the Desert People's Way.
