LOLA THOMAS
Tohono O'odham
Lola
is Tohono O'odham from the White Horse Pass community. Her daughter
is a fifth generation weaver and she is teaching her daughter as
much as she can. She starts young children on horsehair weaving.
Lola herself weaves with willow, yucca and horsehair. She likes
to do mostly miniatures and she is also very good at doing repairs
of baskets. Lola learned to weave from her grandmother at the age
of 13. She doesn't specialize because she likes to try everything.
She has won awards for her weaving.
Lola enjoys
the willow as art and since there are just a few willow weavers
left she would like to continue it and pass it on. Weaving brings
back her culture inside herself. Growing up in city schools and
boarding school she feels she wasn't connected to her culture. Weaving
connects her to her culture. She would like people to know that
weaving willow is a lot of hard work.
