JOSEPH LOPEZ
Tohono O'odham

Joseph Lopez is a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation, and lives in Pisinemo, Pisinimo District. Joseph's grandmother was a weaver, and he first learned how to weave by watching her.

Joseph started weaving around 1986. He makes coil and closed stitch baskets, and sometimes mixes the two styles in the same basket. He began to weave baskets on his own after watching his grandmother and wife weave. Each split stitch basket he weaves has different patterns. Joseph has won blue and red ribbons at the O'odham Tash.

Joseph just really enjoys weaving. He likes to weave because it keeps up O'odham traditions, traditions that need to continue. He wants to teach the younger generation to keep these traditions going.
