DORINDA FRANCISCO
Tohono
O'odham
Dorinda
Francisco is a 17-year-old Tohono O'odham basketweaver from the
village of Comobabi. She first learned to weave from her mother
Mary Francisco. Since then, she has continued to learn more about
the weaving tradition at the Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership
School where she is a Junior. In addition to weaving baskets,
Dorinda loves to play basketball, and serves as Tohono O'odham Nation
Rodeo Queen.
Dorinda makes both closed stitch and
split stitch baskets. Her favorite design to weave is the star pattern.
For Dorinda, knowing that she is continuing
something that her ancestors started is inspiring. She plans to
keep weaving throughout her life.
