DELPHINE
SARAFICIO
Tohono O'odham
My name is Delphine Saraficio
and I am from the village of Santa Rosa on the Tohono O'odham Nation.
I learned to make baskets from my mother's aunt, the late Molly,
when I was six years old. I learned by listening to my great aunt's
instructions. I had to learn how to sit still for a number of hours
which was very hard for me to do.
I weave baskets
because in my daily life I am running around in different directions
and I get the feeling of being lost. Weaving allows me to slow down
and focus on going in one direction. I am inspired by the completion
of a basket and how the design comes together.
This gives
me the focus of being an O'odham, as my grandmother used to tell
me "I'itoi [Elder Brother] gave me this talent for me to use."
I now teachingother people from age
3 to adult. I feel their excitement.
