ART WILSON
Tohono
O'odham
My
name is Art Wilson and I am of the Ban Clan. I am originally from
Cehedag Vaya, but currently live in Little Tucson. Basketweaving
was not traditionally a man's art, but with encouragement from my
grandmother, I learned to weave to keep up the traditions, and I
am now a weaver.
Most of my
baskets are coiled and follow the traditional patterns. An aunt
and my paternal grandmother are both excellent weavers, and are
my teachers.
I weave baskets
to keep the tradition alive within my family. I am inspired that
we can take natural fibers from the desert and create something
beautiful and useful. Weaving for me
keeps up the old art and craft of my ancestors.
